Take a Photo Tour of Weeks State Park
A Stroll through History
Weeks State Park is not just a haven for nature lovers but also a site of great historical significance. The park was named after John Wingate Weeks, a Lancaster native who played a pivotal role in American forestry and conservation. His legacy is preserved in the magnificent Weeks Estate, the centerpiece of the park. The estate, perched atop Mount Prospect, includes the stunning Weeks mansion, designed in the Colonial Revival style, offering panoramic views of the Presidential Range of the White Mountains. Visitors can delve into the past with a tour of the mansion, which houses exhibits on the Weeks family and the history of the region. Sadly, they did not allow photo taking inside the mansion.
Natural Splendor and Wildlife
The park’s diverse habitats, including forests, wetlands, and open fields, are a sanctuary for wildlife. Bird watchers will be delighted by the variety of species that can be spotted here, from the majestic bald eagles to the melodious thrushes. I did hear several birds on my visit, but wasn’t able to photograph them. The park’s trails wind through dense forests and open meadows, offering glimpses of the local fauna, including deer, foxes, and an array of small mammals and reptiles.
Hiking and Recreation
For those seeking adventure, Weeks State Park boasts a network of well-maintained trails. The highlight is the 1.5-mile auto road leading to the summit of Mount Prospect. Hikers can enjoy a challenging trek up the mountain or opt for a leisurely drive to the top. I opted to drive due to time constraints in my carpet cleaning schedule; however, I would highly recommend the hike. Nevertheless, it’s nice to know you have options. The road up is narrow, but only a five minute drive. I can’t imagine how this fellow made it to the mailbox for the Sunday paper? However you choose to reach the summit, once there, the 360-degree view from the fire tower is breathtaking and not to be missed. The park also offers picnicking facilities, making it a perfect spot for a family outing.
During winter, the park transforms into a snowy wonderland, offering opportunities for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. The snow-covered landscapes provide a tranquil setting for winter sports enthusiasts. Personally, I was not up to the winter hike, with all the ice, snow, and cold! (brrrrrrr!)
Educational Programs and Events
Weeks State Park is not only a place for recreation but also for learning. The park hosts various educational programs and events throughout the year, aimed at promoting environmental awareness and conservation. These programs offer a hands-on learning experience about the local ecology, wildlife, and the importance of preserving our natural heritage, and the pristine beauty of the White Mountains.
